POTUS: Vice President Joe Biden will be in New York City today to make an appearance on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” The White House says, “the episode will focus on the backlog in processing rape kits and efforts to prevent violence against women.”
Election 2016: Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI) sends a letter to President Obama saying GOP nominee Donald Trump “is unfit to receive sensitive intelligence… and to withhold briefing”. A liberal group called CREDO has made a petition urging Trump not to receive security briefings, within 24 hours the petition received 80,000 signatures.
Economy: U.S. GDP only grows 1.2% far less than expected for second-quarter according to the Commerce Department.
Supreme Court: U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit rules down on North Carolina’s voter I.d law. The voter I.d law was introduced in 2013 by lawmakers; requires the voter to show a picture i.d before casting ballots and ended same-day voter registration. Three judges assigned to the case said, “passed with racially discriminatory intent.”
U.S.: The University of Wisconsin will offer a course on “environmental justice movement” and merging it with civil rights this fall, the course “Green Lives Matter.” The purpose of the course is to teach students the impact of environmental hazards and policies.
World: Police in El Salvador conduct raids arresting 77 members of MS-13 one of the world’s largest gangs. The operation targeted the group’s finances by seizing; weapons, cars, cash, bank accounts, motels, bars, brothels, car and bus dealerships that were used to laundry money.
Science/Tech/Health: Florida reports four case of people infected with the Zika virus in the Miami area, these are the first known cases to hit the U.S. The four cases involve three men and one woman. Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) said, “while no mosquitoes have tested positive for the Zika virus” the Health Department “is aggressively testing people in this area to ensure there are no other cases.”
Sports: “The International Weightlifting Federation has banned the Russian federation and all its weightlifters from the Rio Olympics.”
